where to ride in granada - Cáñar
Switchback Heaven: The Cáñar Loop
If you’ve been dreaming of a ride filled with switchbacks, this is it. The Cáñar loop is an extension of our ‘Around the Reservoir’ route, but the addition of 22 switchbacks makes it something truly special.
Ride Overview
The Cáñar loop combines challenging climbs, breathtaking views, and exhilarating descents. It’s a ride that rewards effort with unforgettable scenery and a sense of accomplishment.
The Climb Begins: Órgiva to Cáñar
The climb to Cáñar technically starts as soon as you cross the bridge off the main road heading towards Órgiva. However, it gets truly special when you take the left turn towards the town at kilometer 19. From here, the climb becomes steeper, with gradients reaching up to 15% in spots. As you gain elevation, the views become increasingly stunning, and you’ll feel a growing sense of achievement as you look back at the layers of switchbacks you’ve conquered.
Bar Piki: A Perfect Stop in Cáñar
Once you reach Cáñar, Bar Piki is one of our favorite spots to relax and refuel before tackling the descent back down the switchbacks towards Órgiva. It’s a great place to catch your breath and enjoy the atmosphere of this charming town.
The Climb to Lanjarón: Fountain of Youth
From the roundabout in Órgiva, there’s a 10km climb to Lanjarón, a town recognized by the World Health Organization for having the highest life expectancy in the world. The combination of pure mountain air, Mediterranean diet, and the quality of its waters ensures that many locals live beyond 100 years. As you come into Lanjarón, you’ll find a fountain at the first left turn (26.5km into the ride)—a perfect spot to refill your bottles. Lanjarón is also an excellent place to stop for coffee at one of its many local bars and restaurants.
The Descent: Lanjarón to Vélez de Benaudalla
After soaking in Lanjarón’s fountain of youth, it’s all downhill. The ride back to Vélez de Benaudalla features three distinct descents: a fast, flowing start with sweeping corners; a tight, twisting middle section requiring focus; and a straight, speedy finale for a thrilling finish.
A Ride That Lives Up to the Dream
The Cáñar loop is a ride that lives up to the dream of switchback heaven. With its challenging climbs, rewarding descents, and stunning scenery, it’s a route that leaves you feeling accomplished and inspired.

The Climbs of Granada & The Sierra Nevada
The climbs of the Sierra Nevada may not be the most well known, but they are undoubtedly some of the best in Europe. Most tend to exclusively consider the likes of Mallorca or Girona for their cycling holiday/training camps. While these are all great options, the Sierra Nevada matches and even outdoes each of the aforementioned
