The weather - south of the sierra

People often get the impression that the Sierra Nevada has a colder winter climate. Whilst this rings true for the city of Granada and the Ski Station at 2500masl, which can both experience bitterly cold temperatures in the winter. This is not the case for us on the southern side of the mountain. We're based at 100masl and only a few kilometers away from the Costa Tropical which has, as the name would suggest, a sub-tropical climate. The area is blessed with mildest winter temperatures in Spain with 320 days of sunshine per year, much warmer and less rain than the likes of Girona or Mallorca. It's one of the few regions of Europe where crops such as avocados, bananas and mangoes grow.

The professional teams visit the Sierra Nevada area from February onwards for high altitude training camps in preparation towards the hilly classics or the Grand Tours. We begin our training camps and cycling vacations from January and run until November, with the peak season beginning in March for spring training. In March, April and early May the conditions are perfect for cycling. The climbs are accessible all year round but it can be a little cold at 1500 MASL in early January. Summer months are generally quite hot and it becomes prohibitively hot from mid-day. Autumn is a great time to visit as the temperature cools and the nights are much cooler.
