A Challenging Ride to Spain’s Highest Village
This is not one for the faint-hearted. This amazing loop to Spain’s highest village, Trevélez, is designed for more advanced riders seeking a thrilling and demanding cycling experience.
Ride Overview
This 105km anti-clockwise loop takes you to one of the highest villages in Spain, Trevélez. The route begins with an immediate climb from Vélez and offers a mix of challenging ascents, technical descents, and stunning scenery.
The Initial Climb: Vélez to Torvizcón
After leaving Vélez, you begin climbing immediately towards Órgiva and continue to the idyllic town of Torvizcón. Our first recommended café stop is at Hotel Sahyl, the first building on the left as you enter the town over the bridge. Although the town is only 29km into the ride, it’s a great spot to refuel and refill your bottles before tackling the Mines Climb. If you don’t need a café stop, there’s a water fountain across the road to refill your bottles.
The Mines Climb: A Test of Endurance
Although you’ve already been climbing from Vélez, the Mines Climb begins after a brief and technical descent into the valley after Torvizcón. This 13km climb features some steep gradients, with a well-deserved break in the gradient about two-thirds of the way up. The climb is challenging but rewarding, leading you closer to Trevélez.
Trevélez: The Ham Capital of Spain
Trevélez, located 53km into the climb, is the perfect spot for a lunch break. This town, with a population of around 850, is known as the Ham Capital of Spain—so be sure to sample some local jamón during your stop. On weekends, Trevélez can get busy with tourists, but this means plenty of excellent restaurants to choose from. Don’t forget to refill your bottles at the running fountain of fresh mountain water in the town center.
The Downhill Half: Trevélez to Órgiva
After a few more kilometers of climbing out of Trevélez, the second half of the ride begins—the downhill section. On a clear day, the stretch between Trevélez and Órgiva is one of the most enjoyable and scenic roads in the Sierra Nevada, offering breathtaking views and a thrilling descent.
