a conversation with HARRY SPEAK

The Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a chat with the first applicant selected for the 2024 program.

Congratulations, Harry! How did you get into cycling?

Cheers! I started out mountain biking for a laugh, but a mate suggested trying road cycling at the York Sport circuit, and I was hooked.

Nice! Any other sports in your background?

I used to swim, played a bit of cricket, and did Rugby Union, but now cycling takes up most of my time. I also do strength and conditioning sessions and a bit of running for fun.

How would you describe your cycling style?

I'm an all-rounder. Love stage races, do well in TTs and one-day races. I'm all about attacking and staying up front.

Your proudest cycling moment?

Definitely bagging 3rd in the road under 16's National Championships this year as a first-year. Got in the main break and sprinted for the podium.

What are your cycling goals for the next two years?

Win the road National Championships next year, rock the Youth Tour of Scotland, and hit the podium in all road Nationals. In year 2, join a Junior team, be a good teammate, and snag as many wins as possible.

Any favorite pro cyclists?

Wout van Aert is the man. Love his all-round skills and resilience.

And your favorite race?*

The road World Championships for one-day races, and I dig all stage races for the different challenges they throw at you.

Do you work with a coach?

Yeah, Kevin McCambridge.

Ever been to a cycling camp?

Yep, did a couple of 2-day Yorkshire Dales camps. Good laugh, and the change of scenery was mint.

What are you hoping to gain from the Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship?

Better technical skills, advanced training tips, and learning about nutrition. Riding with top cyclists and picking up on strength & conditioning benefits are gold for my development.

Exciting times ahead, Harry! Thanks for chatting, and good luck with your cycling journey.

Cheers! Can't wait to see what's in store.
