a conversation with Killian O'Brien

The Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a chat with the first applicant selected for the 2024 program.

Tell us, how did your cycling journey begin?

It all started when I began cycling to school at the age of 5. When I turned 8, my dad, a member of Orwell Wheelers, encouraged me to join the club. The first few years were all about fun sessions, but once I hit the U16 category, I started taking cycling more seriously. In 2022, I began receiving coaching, and the competitive side of the sport really drew me in.

What made you focus on cycling over other sports?

I dabbled in various sports like GAA, football, running, and Irish dancing when I was younger. However, my interest gradually shifted, and by the time I hit U16, cycling became my main focus.

How would you describe your cycling style?

I'd classify myself as a climber with a good kick for breakaways and decent time-trialing abilities.

Your proudest moment in cycling so far?

Winning the junior category in the Irish national series and finishing 7th in the men's elite field this year. Also, securing 3rd in the elite and 1st in junior in one of the rounds.

What are your cycling goals for the next two years?

Representing Ireland at the World and European Championships is a big one. I also aim to make it into the professional ranks, proving myself on an international level to secure a spot on a U23 development team.

Any favorite pro cyclists who inspire you?

Archie Ryan is a local inspiration. He recently turned pro with Education First and trained on the same roads as me. Attempting to take his local Strava KOMs is always a fun challenge.

What do you hope to gain from the scholarship?

I've never been to a cycling camp, and the idea of training in Spain's beautiful weather is enticing. Improving my cycling skills is a given, but I'm also looking forward to meeting like-minded cyclists and making lasting connections. Hearing about past athletes' amazing experiences sponsored by Sierra Nevada has fueled my excitement for this opportunity.
